All of us, at some point in our lives, have glamorized van life.
The drop-everything-and-just-go life.
The travel the world, free of rent, mortgage, and bills life.
Maybe you’ve thought about it but eventually reality stepped in. Leaving would mean that you might not be able to keep your career that you’ve worked so hard for, and you wouldn’t have a huge fridge full of snacks. And maybe not having a bubble bath once a week is a deal-breaker. The van life certainly isn’t for the faint of heart, however, that doesn’t mean we can’t experience the feeling of letting go of life’s responsibilities.
Every five days, we are given two days off from work where we can do whatever we want, which might just include living in a van. Having a getaway car can provide a complete escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and still give you that taste of van life.
Who Should You Go With?
A weekend getaway can be with anyone; going with your partner, siblings, or even just by yourself can guarantee a great time. Going with someone is a great way to build your relationship with them in a stress-free way. Having a getaway car or bag means you don’t have to go on super long adventures that need extensive planning. It’s an opportunity for you to spend time together and do new things that make you both excited.
Going alone can be an amazing time of massive self-development. You might find a passion that you usually don’t have time for. Going alone can also help you focus on your next step in life, spur creativity, and build a newfound sense of independence.
What Goes Into a Getaway Car or Bag?
You can make your getaway car as simple or extravagant as you want to. It all depends on you. For starters, you might not even have or want a car, but you still want to experience your weekends away. Or maybe you are someone who likes to travel light. That’s when a weekend bag (what I like to call a ‘weekender’) is perfect. Some necessities include a change of clothes, spare shoes, essential toiletries, a portable charger, and your favorite snacks.
As for creating a getaway car, you can go as big as upcycling a van to be equipped with a full kitchenette or as simple as letting down the back seats in your ol’ reliable car. Next, think about your destination -- what you need to tour a city is different to what you need for hiking. That said, there are bare necessities that you need on any road trip. Consider taking the supplies in your weekender along with extra blankets, pillows, UV sunglasses, food, a water bottle, a good navigation system, a map, a car adapter, a flashlight, and a first aid kit.
Where Should You Go?
As long as you intend to wholeheartedly let go of the workweek and embrace your freedom, any destination will be worthwhile. It depends on what you like to do or what you’ve always wanted to experience. That might mean driving out to a new city and becoming a tourist for a day, or going to a favorite spot in the mountains to camp out there and get closer to nature. Remember: where you go is not as important as just getting up and going.
When Should You Go?
The beauty of having a getaway car or a getaway bag is that you don’t have to pack hours before. Going away during the weekend is ideal. Seize it!
Why Should You Get Away on the Weekends?
For as many reasons as you might have to stay in, I promise there are more for getting away. You will lower your stress levels by taking yourself out of your daily routine. You will break the monotony of everyday life, which will leave you feeling refreshed and ready to work hard again. Traveling will also build your knowledge and it might just bring you a new perspective that a TV show wouldn’t. Traveling is also one of the best ways to build a relationship with someone, whether you’ve known them or just met them. It’s an opportunity to get rid of life’s distractions. It’s a chance for you to try new things, find out what you like to do, or find out who you are.
