Social Media Trends of the Week: Euphoria Inspired Makeup

By Skye Cross

Quarantine left us with even more time to experiment with our look, so we’ve seen more new makeup trends introduced via platforms like TikTok and Instagram. One trend that has been popular on the two apps has been “Euphoria Inspired” recreations of makeup, outfits and even nails. If you aren’t familiar with the HBO show “Euphoria,” it is known for featuring actors such as Zendaya, Hunter Schafer, Alexa Demie and more. The show touches on a variety of issues such as substance abuse, violence and drama through a group of high school students. The show took off after its release last fall because of the unique expression of fashion and makeup that we haven’t seen in other shows prior. Because a lot of these makeup looks and fashion pieces are not typically something most people would consider “everyday wear,” many people have taken to TikTok to record their Euphoria transformations.

The key to recreating an authentic Euphoria look starts mainly with the eyes. Most looks include a bold, bright eyeshadow shade all over the lid, blending up slightly past the crease and making sure to bring the color down under the lower lash line. An alternative to the eyeshadow is choosing a bright colored liquid eyeliner and using it to create a bold wing that accentuates the eyes. Lastly for the eyes, glitter or eye gems with creative lining are also infamous on the show. If you are looking to recreate a Euphoria look, there is really no “wrong” way to use your eyes as a centerpiece.

When looking at the cast’s face makeup, they tend to keep it light with just a layer of foundation focusing on flawless coverage. They tend to avoid any heavy contouring and instead just use blush and highlight to emphasize facial features. To complete the look, you can either choose a natural or bold lip depending on which look you are trying to achieve. To further enhance your Euphoria look, try incorporating any bold, and colorful contemporary piece in your closets with ’80s casual-inspired pieces.

Challenges we have been seeing on TikTok include people trying out different Euphoria makeup looks over the course of the week. Although I have personally not tried out any Euphoria makeup on myself, it’s clear that you can really get creative when it comes to playing around with the look. The Euphoria makeup trend is a way to express yourself above just an outfit—a trend that we will see grow as 2020 continues. The show has set a tone for young people all over the world by including a storyline where the cast members stray away from the typical high school drama series that we often see. The Euphoria challenges are a fun way to see how other people recreate their own version of the aesthetic of the show.
