Fashion’s Biggest Night: Met Gala 2021

The biggest night of fashion has just happened! Of course, I am talking about the Met Gala 2021. The theme of this year's Met Gala was “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.” The guests didn't necessarily have to wear an American designer or label. However, their looks were supposed to represent American culture and everything America stands for.

The 2021 rendition of the Met Gala was different from the ones we have seen before. Due to the Met Gala 2020 being canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, additional measures had to be taken this year to ensure the safety of all the guests. All the guests were required to be vaccinated before the event. Lots of celebrities, such as Nicki Minaj, Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Zendaya, Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, Cardi B, and Kylie Jenner, choose not to attend the event for one reason or another.

Here are some of the noteworthy Met Gala 2021 looks:

Rihanna

How can one talk about the Met Gala and not mention the queen herself? Rihanna wore a custom-made black Balenciaga overcoat and a matching hat. The outfit had black, voluminous ruffles, which added to the drama and were very Met-approved.

Kendall Jenner

Kendall Jenner looked sensational in a Givenchy sheer gown with rhinestone embellishments. This look was inspired by the 1964 film “My Fair Lady” and paid homage to the legendary actress Audrey Hepburn, who wore a similar dress in the movie.

Amanda Gorman

National Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman wore a stunning ultramarine Vera Wang gown. The gown was embroidered with over 3,000 stones! She recreated the Statue of Liberty with her outfit, accessorizing it with a book similar to the one the statue holds. She had stones across her face as well and wore a laurel crown as a headpiece. She looked mind-blowing and dressed to the theme!

Lil Nas X

While Lady Gaga was notably missing from this year's Met Gala, Lil Nas X made sure we didn't miss her presence. Pulling off a Lady Gaga, he wore three different outfits to the carpet. For the first look, he wore a beautiful, gold, ornate cape. He proceeded to shed the cape and reveal a gold armor suit underneath it. Two looks weren't enough for Lil Nas X because he had one more look planned for us. His last look was a gorgeous body-fitting suit fitted with crystals. Wearing Versace for all three outfits, Lil Nas X looked ethereal. He killed it for his Met Gala debut!

Billie Eilish

The youngest co-chair in the history of the Met Gala, Billie Eilish looked like a dream in her Marilyn Monroe-inspired peach Oscar de la Renta gown. Billie is known to be vocal about animal rights and veganism, so not only did she make a stunning debut on the red carpet, but she also convinced the label Oscar De La Renta to go fur-free. Isn't that a lovely initiative by Billie?

Timothée Chalamet

Timothée Chalamet proved he was relatable when he showed up at the Met Gala in sweatpants. Not only that, but he also walked ten blocks to get to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He wore an outfit designed by Haider Ackermann, and it consisted of a white satin tuxedo, white sweatpants, and Converse shoes. He kept the look simple, classy, and looked very handsome!

Lili Reinhart

Lili Reinhart showed up at the Met Gala in a beautiful Christian Siriano sheer gown with flowers embellished on it. However, those flowers weren't ordinary flowers. They were the flowers representing the 50 states of the USA. Talk about out-of-the-box thinking, right? She kept it simple, elegant, and stuck to the theme!

Kaia Gerber

There is nothing more classic than an all-black gown, and it seems like Kaia Gerber agrees with me because she opted for the same at the Met Gala 2021. Wearing a black, strapless, Oscar de la Renta gown with a puffy skirt and a body-hugging bodice, she looked exquisite. This was also her way to pay tribute to Bianca Jagger, who wore a similar gown to the Met Gala 1981. This look is truly ageless and can make anyone look stunning.

Yara Shahidi

Yara Shahidi honored the acclaimed entertainer Josephine Baker, the first Black woman to star in a major motion film, through her gold-embroidered Dior tulle gown. She accessorized this look with a matching gold veil and gloves. We loved how she kept her outfit dignified and beautiful.

Imaan Hammam

Imaan Hammam took star-studded to a new level with her translucent white Versace gown. The Dutch model looked brilliant on the carpet and surely did justice to the theme.

Lupita Nyong'o

What fabric is more American than good ol' denim, right? Lupita Nyong'o showed up on the carpet wearing a Versace gown made entirely out of denim. She looked fantastic, and this was a great way of dressing to the theme while also looking beautiful!

The collection “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” will be opening its doors to the public on September 18th. Young and emerging designers have contributed to 70% of the collection. Isn't that a marvelous achievement? The collection belongs to a two-part series. The next exhibition will feature the collection “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” and it is scheduled to be displayed on the 5th of May 2022. We can't wait to see even more of these amazing looks the Met Gala guests have for us!
